How to care for your jewellery

Fine jewellery lasts a lifetime and even beyond that as family heirlooms are typically passed down from generation to generation. No matter how new or old your piece of jewellery is, with a little caution and care you can preserve and protect so that it always looks its best.

To help you take the best possible care of your jewellery we’ve made a list of things you shouldn’t do with it.

1.       Don’t swim with your jewellery on. The chlorine in swimming pools can affect the metal and cause your stones to cloud up. Your jewellery can also easily get lost, especially if you take it to the beach.

2.       Don’t shower with your jewellery on. Continuous exposure to water and soap can leave your jewellery looking dull and lifeless. There’s also a risk of losing your precious pieces down the drain.

3.       Don’t cook with your jewellery on. Cooking oils can stain the metal. Food particles can also get stuck in your jewellery and make it dirty.

4.       Don’t clean with your jewellery on. Exposure to harsh chemicals such as bleach and cleaning detergents can damage the metal and certain stones as well as cause them to lose their shine.

5.       Don’t exercise or perform strenuous activities with your jewellery on. A hard impact can cause your jewellery to chip, scratch or even break. There’s also a risk of injuring yourself or someone else.

6.       Don’t apply makeup with your jewellery on. Makeup, perfume, lotion and hair products can create buildup on your jewellery and cause it to lose its shine.

7.       Don’t rub your jewellery against any metal or rough surface. Constant rubbing can wear down rhodium plating on your white gold or silver jewellery, leaving it to turn yellow or tarnish. It can also scratch the metal and stones.
